Prepare for NTSE Exam: The SMART Way

THE NATIONAL TALENT SEARCH EXAMINATION OR NTSE EXAM 2017, ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. MANY STUDENTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN ON WITH THE PREPARATIONS WHILE MANY OTHERS ARE JUST ABOUT TO START.

And, today we are gonna look at some SMART ways to succeed in these examinations.

Conducted by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT),  NTSE is a  scholarship examination for class 10th students.

The SMART Way

SMART goal setting brings structure and trackability into your goals and objectives. In stead of vague resolutions, SMART goal setting creates performance tracking towards a certain career objective, with clear milestones and an estimation of the goal’s attainability.

SMART goals are Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant Time-bound

How to Incorporate SMART Goals for NTSE Exam Preparation –

  1. Set your desired marks/ranks/percentile –

  • While most students do not put much thought into it, you should set some of the things first. Mark your desired college on the web and social networking websites, and check out what rank is needed for that particular college.

  • This will help you make a well laid out plan and a decent chance at success.

  1. Know your Syllabus –

Know where you stand currently and what is important from the exam standpoint. The idea here is to have a sheet with all the chapters in the exam syllabus listed. Here are some tips:
  • Make a List of chapters in the order of importance in exam
  • Next to each chapter make a mark on whether this is your strong area or weak area
  • Next to each chapter make a note on how many questions you have practiced and how many % marks you got so far

  1. Identify the Preparation Material –

  • Read all NCERT books line by line Even if you get through stage 1 without reading NCERT, you can not make it through stage 2 without more knowledge

  • Most good students are good in Sciences and Maths only and forget about Social Science. Whereas, social science has maximum impact.

  • There is a lot to do to prepare for National Talent Search Examination, you have to go beyond your school books. Use publishers like; Arihant, Tata McGraw Hill and S. Chand for high quality material.

  • Take help of online learning websites. These E-Learning websites include online practice papers which are mostly available for free online. Attempting E-Mock papers can help you cover all unique questions.

  1. Plan in Advance –

NTSE has three sections MAT , SAT and LAT. Out of the three only the marks of MAT and SAT are considered while preparing the merit list. You only need to qualify the LAT paper with 40% of the total marks.

a.) Practice MAT as much as you can
Solve as many questions as you can. This will increase your speed and accuracy.

b.) Focus on SST
SST is the subject with the highest weightage. The NCERT books of classes 9th and 10th must be thoroughly read. No other reference books are needed, as long as you read NCERT properly.

c.) Science and Maths
Again, NCERT is a must. But in some points, it won’t be enough. You need above school level of knowledge, especially in Maths and Chemistry.

  1. Practice and Analyse Weekly

Keep all the plans in terms of practicing questions only and make your chapter reading based on those. This is the KISS (Keep It Simple and Straightforward) approach.
About the plan tips (Time: 1 Week):
  • Plan should include the chapter you will study this week and number of questions, be Specific.

  • Take into account any event planned in the week so that your goal is achievable. It is easy to get pumped up and make huge goals and then end the week with frustration.

  • In the plan include the strike rate targeted for this week. Start with first 10 questions and see the strike rate, then analyze your mistakes and try to improve them in next set. This makes the goal result oriented.
