  1. On March 21, 1913, Bismillah Khan was born as Qamaruddin Khan in Dumraon, Bihar. Later, he got the name ‘’Bismillah’’ (meaning, ‘by the name of God’), as it was similar to his elder brother’s name ‘Shamsuddin’

  1. In one of the rare and most revered moments in 1947, he performed at the Red Fort in Delhi. This is when the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru invited him on the eve of India’s first Independence Day. Not only in India, Khan even performed for international audience at Cannes Art Festival, Osaka Trade Fair and World Exposition in Montreal





  1. Apart from being a live audience performer, he also left his mark in many old Bollywood songs. His distinct style included – no head phones, and seating similar to that of a concert. Many Kannada old new mp3 lovers often listen mp3 online of his shehnai in Karedaru Kelade, sung by S. Janaki. His foray in the hindi songs include the most notable mp3 songs – Gunj Uthi Shehnai in 1959, and the extremely popular soundtrack of film ‘Swades’ in 2004

  1. He was given Bharat Ratna award in 2001 – the highest civilian honour in India. Apart from Padma Bhushan in 1968 and Padma Shri in 1961. A recognition of his wide array of contribution to hindi cinema’s old bollywood songs and Indian culture

  1. Being a family man, Ustad Bismillah Khan was sort of ‘married’ to his Shehnai. He lovingly addressed the musical instrument as ‘Begum’ or true soul mate. This bond was witnessed for the last time when he was buried with his shehnai at Fatemain burial ground in Varanasi in 2006.

Although the shehnai maestro is no longer among us, but gestures like Google Doodle, will make sure that his playlists music remains as a favourite when we listen mp3 online.
