JEE, NEET may be held Twice a Year

 

The lower house of the Indian Parliament has initiated a debate on holding the engineering entrance exam JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and the national medical entrance exam, NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test) – twice a year.

  
NTA to hold NEET, JEE

The Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Mr. Upendra Kushwaha made a signigcant statement in the Lok Sabha.

“The NTA (National Testing Agency will initially conduct those entrance exams which are held by the CBSE. The exams will be conducted online at least twice a year, thereby giving an adequate opportunity to the candidates to bring out their best,” Mr. Kushwaha said.

The NTA will be an autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organisation, to conduct the entrance exams for the higher educational institutions.


Reducing the burden on CBSE

The NTA is expected to take over the responsibility from Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE for conducting these examinations with some fundamental changes in its formats. The two national level examinations, i.e. JEE and NEET may be held twice a year in the online format.

So, how exactly can NTA and the decision to conduct JEE Main and NEET help millions of students?

  1. The first benefit of NTA would be the conduct of JEE Main and NEET examinations twice a year in an online format. The twice a year model for chief entrance examinations would help students to accordingly pace their studies

  1. This decision would also give students an additional opportunity to appear without wasting their year.

  1. Not all students are successful in getting admission to top medical and engineering colleges in India. And students accordingly drop one year to apply while preparing with mock papers on eLearning websites. Having exams twice will give them another shot to clear in the same year.

  1. Also, the examinations are at present conducted in the months of April and May, which are just after the board examinations for class 12th. The twice a year may give students the time to pace their preparations, which is bound to benefit students immensely.

  1. Finally, there is a possibility of curriculum revision due to NTA. At present the syllabus for JEE Main and NEET is based on CBSE Class 11 and 12. The changes might allow a better revision of curriculum, beneficial for state boards students as well.

In the end

It remains to be seen what more changes will be brought in to the NTA. And, whether that will have an impact on JEE 2018 and NEET. Or, whether the changes come into effect in 2019. Similiarly, for students studying through free online mock test, the eLearning websites will need to make the changes.
