Conquer Chemistry Mock Test with these Study Tips

It is that time of the year folks, the examination time. From rote learning tips to finding previous year papers, to locating free mock test websites, students want to leave no stone unturned.

Today we will be dealing with the subject of Chemistry. Yes, the same subject that Walter White and his student Jesse Pinkman have ‘’fun’’ with in Breaking Bad. Sorry to digress!

While some people might like to study chemistry in school and later pursue a career in it. Not all people find it fun. One has to remember that it takes time, persistence, concentration, and lots of practice.

If you are someone who is having a tough time in solving chemistry mock test papers or understanding the basic fundamentals, then you are in the right place. These study tips might help you:

  1. Understand the course structure –

The chemistry syllabus varies from region to region in India and elsewhere.  It may have any of the five traditional branches or a combination of two or more fields of the subject. The five branches include:

Inorganic chemistry
Organic chemistry
Physical chemistry
Analytical chemistry
Biochemistry (physiological chemistry)

Therefore, a better understanding of course structure is needed. Whether it is on eLearning websites or a guide book. Some additional things to check in structure include:
Library usage, lecture notes, extra material

  1. Watch out for Maths

Mathematics is an integral part of chemistry, though most people tend to ignore that. It is critical to revise and practice, some basic things like: addition, subtraction, division, fractions, percent, simple algebra and logarithms. Give at least a week to study basic math before pursuing your online chemistry course or mock papers online

  1. Know the Terminology

Another important tip is to learn and practice the symbols and terminology of chemistry. Whether it is in free mock papers or school books, apply these techniques:

  • Put all the definitions in your own words along with some examples. Recite those definitions.
  • Apply similar technique with symbols. Put them on 3’’ x 5’’ flash cards. Review them before sleeping and when you’re up.
  • Learn to name chemical substances when given the chemical formulas or symbols.

  1. Memorize selectively

A big syllabus can surely be overwhelming. Therefore, memorize selective material. For instance, memorize chemical symbols and names of the 40 most commonly used elements. Also memorize diatomic molecules from the periodic table like H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, At2 (inverted L).

After every chapter, attempt online test series corresponding to it. Work out at least 10 problems per study session and review at least five problems from previous study sessions. Your proficiency in solving problems increases with practice.

  1. Look for Real life examples

Mock Test or online test series are helpful, but your real life also contains several study tips. Keep your interest up by connecting what you study to day to day examples in your life.

The next time you go to a pharmacy store, take a closer look at bottles for names of chemical compounds. Try and recognise the common and formal name. For e.g., ‘’Tums’’ is calcium carbonate, and rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol.

Another trick is to find difference in related items. For example, the difference between a proton and an electron. Similarly, correlate, the common terms. Definitions and concepts are more understandable when they are related to each other.
